Baby girl pregnant with twins? Just when you thought you heard it all, this story comes along a story of doctors removing two fetuses from a 3-week-old girl, who was born pregnant with twins.
Surgery was carried out by doctors in the Queen Elizabeth Hospital on the ‘pregnant baby’ to remove the foetuses.
They were successfully removed and the child was able to leave hospital 8 days after the surgery.
The foetuses were 8-10 ten weeks old and already partly developed.
Each had limbs, skin, a spine, intestines, brain tissue and umbilical cords.
Dr.Nichlos Chow, one of the doctors who operated on the child said it was ‘one of those very rare things to make the world stand still.’
The condition is known as foetus-in-foetu and only occurs in 1 in 500,000 births.
It occurs when a partially developed foetus incorporates into a normally developing foetus in the womb.
Only 200 cases have ever been recorded worldwide.
The cause of this condition is unknown.
The World Health Organisation has classified it as a type of cancer called ‘mature tertoma’.
