BlackBerry patent lawsuit filed against Nokia, Report

Two former smartphone kings, Nokia and BlackBerry, have become embroiled in a lawsuit involving patents relating to networking gear.

In a 96-page lawsuit, reported in ArsTechnica, the company claims Nokia infringed 11 BlackBerry technology patents “related to LTE- and UMTS/UTRAN-compliant products and services”.

These include “a number of transmit antennas found in a base station” and a “scattered pilot pattern and channel estimation for MIMO-OFDM systems”, adds the website.

Some of the patents were previously owned by Nortel Networks, which Nokia attempted to purchase in 2009, reports Bloomberg.

According to TechCrunch, the lawsuit doesn’t request Nokia terminate its use of BlackBerry’s patents, but instead looks to “collect on damages related to the royalty fees it charges for licenses on the technologies”.

BlackBerry announced last September it was ending production of its devices to instead focus on developing software for other smartphone manufacturers.

Last year, Nokia lodged an infringement lawsuit against Apple claiming the Cupertino-based tech giant had illegally used 32 of its patents covering displays, user interface, software, antenna, chipset and video coding.
