Blood donors needed as summer nears, Report

With added pressure on supply and no shortage of demand, Canadian Blood Services is looking to stockpile the stuff that’s normally best kept on the inside to get through the summer.

Canadian Blood Services is hoping 200,000 generous folks across the country will give a little of themselves over the next 10 weeks so when someone does direly need a transfusion, it’ll be there.

Summer’s the time when people get busy or go on holidays and that results in fewer blood donations.

“We need 4,000 blood donations in Mississauga to help patients throughout the summer,” said Michael Betel, regional director of donor relations. “We have a greater need for donors with type ‘O’ blood, but all donors are encouraged to get involved.”

Apart from its permanent clinic at Heartland Town Centre (765 Britannia Road West), Canadian Blood Services will run the following clinics over the next four weeks:

– Friday (April 29) from 1 to 6 p.m. at Sheridan Centre (2225 Erin Mills Parkway);

– Wednesday (May 4) from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Hewlett Packard (Canada) Ltd. (5150 Spectrum Way); and

– Tuesday (May 31) from 2 to 7 p.m. at Eden United Church (3051 Battleford Rd.) in Mississauga.

Canadian Blood Services is asking residents to book an appointment and also bring along a friend, co-worker or a family member.
