The 2017 BMW X1 ranks 1 out of 5 Luxury Subcompact SUVs. The 2017 BMW X1 finishes near the top of our luxury subcompact rankings because of its good performance, upscale and spacious interior, and outstanding cargo space for the class.

Is the BMW X1 a Good SUV?

The BMW X1 enjoys spirited acceleration thanks to a turbocharged four-cylinder engine that puts out 228 horsepower, but this luxury subcompact SUV is about more than its power. The front-wheel-drive X1 is possibly the most fun-to-drive car in the class. It handles well, with a tight turning radius making it highly maneuverable.

A sleek design and an abundance of high-end materials line the X1’s interior, making it an appealing place to spend time. The five-seat X1 comes standard with leatherette upholstery and power-adjustable front seats. Cargo space is best in the segment.

This is a very good SUV, but there is one thing that’s notably missing. The BMW X1 is the only vehicle in the class that doesn’t come standard with any active safety features. If you want a rearview camera, for example, you’ll have to pay an additional $1,150 for the Driver Assistance package.

X1 Engine: Energetic Acceleration

The BMW X1 features a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that puts out 228 horsepower with energetic acceleration. The eight-speed automatic transmission isn’t one of the best around, but it gets the job done. Its biggest flaw – sometimes hesitating to downshift – can be mitigated by putting the X1 into Sport mode. That’s one of three selectable drive modes that alter performance; the other two are Comfort and Eco Pro.
