A woman who adopted the surname of iconic Star Wars character Luke Skywalker as her middle name, has had her passport application rejected by the Home Office because of copyright issues.
Laura Matthews, 29, changed her name by deed poll in 2008, after joking with friends that she would add the famous Star Wars moniker.
After changing her name, Matthews amended her signature to “L Skywalker”.
The Home Office responded to her application, saying that it “will not recognise a change to a name which is subject to copyright or trademark”.
A spokesman said: “We have a duty to ensure the reputation of the UK passport is not called into question or disrepute.”
Matthews said that she has never had a problem with her name before, and has successfully applied for a driving licence, as well as bank cards.
“Everyone else is happy with that signature apart from passport office,” she added.
The Home Office has instructed Matthews to submit a new application using her old signature, but she will be allowed to use her new name on the document.
