She’s excited for her live performance as Maria in NBC’s broadcast of “The Sound of Music,” but unfortunately Carrie Underwood reveals that she has received some harsh criticism for taking on the iconic role.
During her interview with Entertainment Weekly’s Entertainers of the Year issue, the “See You Again” crooner shares details about being attacked by critics and fans after announcing she would playing the same role that Julie Andrews made famous.
The blonde went on to say, ‘I know I’m not Julie. Nobody is and I would never pretend that I was.’ She added, ‘I know my place.’
The special, which also stars True Blood’s Stephen Moyer and Private Practice’s Audra McDonald, will air on NBC. For those craving the original, that will air on ABC on December 22.
Carrie added that she is a big fan of Maria’s.
‘She had this love for nature and this love for the things that God made, this beautiful, the mountains, the music,’ the Oklahoma native told the weekly.
‘And I feel that.’
‘Carrie is Maria,’ Music producer Neil Meron told EW, adding she was his first choice for the role.
Julie, now 78, has also commented on the former American Idol star taking on her beloved part.
‘Fifty years later, it’s time somebody had another crack at it,’ she told Zap2It.
‘I had the best time of my life doing it, and it did wonderful things for me. I think it’s great that it’s being done again, but doing it live must be so daunting … I do hope it works for Carrie, because she’s lovely and I’m a fan. I wish her well.’
Carrie’s version will be slightly different.
‘I know they’re not doing the movie, though,’ Julie added.
‘They’re doing the Broadway show – that’s what they have the rights to – and I don’t know whether it will resonate similarly.’
After gaining instant popularity with The Sound Of Music – which sees the Von Trapp family escape Nazi Germany – Andrews went on to massive success with 1982’s Victor/Victoria. More recently she was in The Princess Diaries with Anne Hathaway in 2001.
The Surrey, England native has also penned a children’s book she co-wrote with her daughter, The Very Fairy Princess Follows Her Heart, and has been supporting the 50th anniversary of her other big hit Mary Poppins from 1964.
