Two-year-old Carter Luckhardt and his family spent his birthday at the Kitchener-Waterloo blood donor clinic.
Luckhardt was born with hypoplastic left heart syndrome where the left side of the heart can’t effectively pump blood to the body.
He required multiple blood transfusions when he had open heart surgery.
Carter’s parents, Becky and Matt Luckhardt are grateful that blood was available for the life-saving surgery their son needed 18 hours after he was born.
In a release, Carter’s mom Becky says they are trying to give back to those who are in need, “The blood donations that Carter needed as an infant were provided by strangers. We know there are others out there waiting to be saved by blood donations, just like Carter was.”
Tara Gutscher with Canadian Blood Services says events like these are not uncommon.
“A lot of people are looking for how they can give back or what they can do to help once they’ve had a tragedy or known someone that’s gone through a tragedy– so we do have families that contact us looking to give back the blood donations that their friend or family member used while they were in the hospital. It’s such a fabulous way to help save lives and pass it forward.”
