Earlier this year, Cee-Lo Green announced that he was leaving “The Voice” for good. At that time, the “Crazy” singer blamed his busy schedule for not being able to commit to the hit NBC series, but he has now revealed more reasons which prompted him to quit after four non-consecutive seasons.
“It easily and quickly became a job,” Green said in an interview with Us Weekly to promote his new TBS reality program “The Good Life,” which debuted on June 23.
“Very, very obligating… Taxing and tiring,” he added of why he exited the show. “I still tip my hat to Adam [Levine] and Blake [Shelton] and those guys who continuously do it, but I think I ran my course there just naturally.”
“Amicably, we parted ways,” he continued. “I’ve got some very great memories there. It really has everything to do with me having the leverage to go elsewhere and be a success as well.”
The five-time Grammy-award winning recording artist also revealed in the interview that it was Levine, who was his friend prior to “The Voice,” who first informed him about the show.
“He called and said, ‘Hey man, there’s this new show ‘The Voice’ and I don’t really know what it’s going to be about, and I don’t really want to do any more kind of music shows-do you think it’s cool? If you do it, I’ll do it. If you don’t do it, I won’t do it,'” Green recalled.
CeeLo, who also recently starred with Levine in the new musical film
“Begin Again,” also gave advice to the two new coaches in the show: Gwen Stefani and Pharrell Williams.
“Just kind of pace yourself,” he said. “Find a happy space… Just find it enjoyable, and as long as you’re passionate about discovering new talent and really helping people and encouraging them to be themselves and live out loud and follow their dreams, then you should have no problem.”
CeeLo first dropped the news that he would no longer coming back to the show in a February interview in “The Ellen Degeneres Show,” Fox News reported.
“I’m not coming back at all. I just don’t want to wear out my welcome there, you know what I’m saying? I have so many other things that I want to do. I haven’t released an album in four years. I’m almost done with my album,” he said at the time.
