CFIA: Cantaloupes recalled over Salmonella concerns

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency is recalling cantaloupes sold under two brand names because of the possibility of salmonella contamination.

According to Health Canada, Freshpoint Vancouver Ltd. is recalling Del Monte and Sysco Imperial Fresh brand cantaloupes. The fruit was sold in 12 packs, three packs, and individually in B.C., Alberta, and Manitoba.

Food contaminated with salmonella may not look or smell spoiled but can still make you sick. Young children, pregnant women, the elderly and people with weakened immune systems may contract serious and sometimes deadly infections. Healthy people may experience short-term symptoms such as fever, headache, vomiting, nausea, abdominal cramps and diarrhea. Long-term complications may include severe arthritis.

Recalled products should be thrown out or returned to the store where they were purchased. The recall was issued following test results by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency. There have been no reported illnesses associated with the consumption of these products.

Check to see if you have any of the following recalled fruits in your home:

  • Del Monte brand cantaloupe sold individually through Feb. 18, PLU code 4050;
  • Del Monte brand cantaloupe sold in 12-count cases, Lot 360012, no UPC number; and
  • Sysco Imperial Fresh brand cantaloupe sold in 3-count packs, Lot 127 12 035 5, no UPC number.
