Chevrolet’s new 2017 Camaro ZL1 has set a blisteringly-quick lap time at the Nurburgring, beating its predecessor and teaching some of its European rivals a lesson in the process.
The new Camaro ZL1 lapped the ‘Ring in 7:29.60, placing it in front of the Audi R8 V10 Plus (7:32), in the same league as the Ferrari 458 Speciale (7:29.37) , and behind the (way more expensive) BMW M4 GTS (7:27.88).
In order to prepare it for its record-setting lap, Chevrolet installed some data acquisition equipment on-board, a roll hoop plus Sparco racing seats with six-point harnesses.
Other than that, we’re looking at a completely stock production ZL1, which still means you’re getting a 6.2-liter supercharged V8 with 650 HP and 650 lb-ft (881 Nm) of torque, the new 10-speed automatic, Magnetic Ride Control, Performance Traction Management, 20″ wheels with Goodyear Eagle F1 Supercar rubber, Brembo brakes, full underbody shielding, ZL1-spec rear spoiler & diffuser and 11 heat exchangers.
“To be almost 12 seconds [11.67s] quicker than the 5th generation ZL1 is a testament to the advanced design and technology of the new ZL1,” said Al Oppenheiser, Camaro chief engineer. “From the improved aerodynamics, mass reduction and 650-horsepower LT4 to the Magnetic Ride Control, electronic limited-slip differential and Custom Launch Control, the ZL1 was designed to take on the world’s most challenging track, making it right at home on any track, road or drag strip anywhere.”
In a straight line, the 2017 Camaro ZL1 will hit 60 mph (96 km/h) in 3.5 seconds and cover a 1/4 mile in just 11.4 seconds. It’s also around 220 lbs (100kg) lighter than the regular car, which is why it commands a heftier $62,135 price tag.
“Many fast laps around the Nordschleife are dramatic, with lots of oversteer and steering input,” added Drew Cattell, Camaro ride & handling engineer (and also the driver of the hot lap). “Not so with the ZL1, which is extremely planted and stable, almost calm. With Magnetic Ride and great overall chassis balance, the ZL1 is all about being inch perfect at every turn and carrying a lot of speed.”
