Toronto Police Chief Mark Saunders is having a kidney transplant on Monday, and his wife is the donor.
Remarkable good luck has proven her to be a perfect match for the chief in this regard. And as police personnel said today “in more ways than one”. Saunders told his story to CTV today with his wife at his side. “The stars aligned for me,” he said, seated next to his wife in their west-end home on Friday.
He said that in the late 1990s he discovered he had been living with one good kidney and one which was ailing. It was not the result of a “lifestyle issue” he said, but merely something he was born with. “Later on, it turned out that the other kidney had kidney disease,” he said. The chief has been on home dialysis for 15 months. The operation will take place Monday.
