Clowns are meant to represent laughter and joy, but for some people clowns are a thing from their nightmares. In a scene straight from the movies, creepy clowns have been popping up around California cities.
The latest after-dark sighting came Saturday, when police in Bakersfield responded around 8 p.m. to a report of a clown holding a firearm. Officers searched but didn’t find anyone.
The Bakersfield Californian reports that the latest sighting came after a week during which police received numerous calls about scary or mischievous clowns. Police said they have arrested one minor who acknowledged dressing up and chasing younger juveniles.
A second clown has been spotted in the town of Wasco and documenting his whereabouts on social media. A “Wasco Clown” Instagram account has pictures going back to early October, as well as on Twitter and Facebook.
The Wasco clown is apparently part of a husband and wife art project, according to local media.
A similar creepy clown situation happened last year across the pond in the small U.K. town of Northampton.
