The son of former New Jersey Governor Jon Corzine, Jeffrey Corzine, was found dead in a Mexico city hotel room on Tuesday. The death was apparently a suicide. Jeffrey Corzine, the youngest son of Jon and Joanne Corzine, had been a troubled teen and long suffered from depression and addiction issues. Jeffrey is survived by a sister Jennifer and a brother Josh.
The New York Daily News reported that a source said the 31-year old Jeffrey Corzine had been battling severe depression for an extended period. He was found in a Mexico City hotel. Sources said Jeffrey Corzine had fought substance abuse in the past, but had been counseling in the Alcoholics Anonymous community in Malibu.
When Jon Corzine suffered a near-fatal car accident in 2007, Jeffrey Corzine stayed by his father’s side during the 18 days he spent at Cooper University Hospital. “After that, Jeff seemed to straighten up a lot and the two of them grew much closer,” a source told the New York Post.
Governor Chris Christie sent his regards to the man he defeated in 2009 to become governor in a statement. “My thoughts and prayers are with Governor Corzine, Joanne and the entire Corzine family,” Christie said, according to Businessweek. “They are both devoted parents and the loss they have suffered is unthinkable.”
Jeffrey Corzine is survived by his father Jon Corzine, sister Jennifer; brother Josh; and mother, Joanne Corzine.
