The pressure of celebrity has got to be pretty immense, and sometimes famous folks can crack under the pressure. Symptoms can range from a few ill-advised tweets, all the way on up to a full scale nuclear meltdown of career-crippling capacity! Regardless of the size, these blowups are always sure to land in the headlines. Whether funny, sad, or just plain crazy, we’ve had some doozys in this past year. Head down below for the 13 most epic celeb meltdowns of 2013!
Amanda Bynes
Though Amanda always seemed level headed and sweet compared to some of her wild celebrity peers, the former Nickelodeon starlet took a turn for the worse in 2013.
It started with strange behavior on Twitter, where she constantly spoke out on her need for more plastic surgery, made crude attempts to seduce musician Drake and posted photos of herself looking increasingly less recognizable and wearing very little clothing.
In May, she was arrested for allegedly throwing a bong out the window of her high-rise apartment window in midtown Manhattan, and she showed up to court looking dazed in a ratty blonde wig.
By July, she was involuntarily placed on psychiatric hold after setting fire to the driveway of a California home, and her parents were finally granted temporary conservatorship. She is currently getting help in a Malibu rehabilitation facility.
Charlie Sheen
Charlie Sheen has hardly been the portrait of wholesome over the years, so to shock the world with his behavior is no small feat.
The “Two and a Half Men” star left nearly everyone shocked when he unleashed a media blitz, where he blasted everyone from his bosses at CBS to his ex-wives, all while offering up bizarre declarations and one-liners.
But on a darker note, many expressed concern that America was watching television’s highest-paid actor break down. His children were removed from his home after his estranged wife Brooke Mueller was granted a temporary restraining order against the actor following claims he threatened her several times, and that her children should not be raised in an environment where Sheen’s self-described “epic” partying seemed to be a regular occurrence.
Lindsay Lohan
Lindsay Lohan has become more famous for her stints in jail, mug shot collection and apparent self-destructive behavior in the last few years than she ever was for a film.
After violating the terms of her 2007 DUI probation in 2010, Lohan found herself behind bars, followed by court-enforced rehab. But within weeks of release, she tested positive for cocaine and went back to rehab with a shattered career and rumors of heavy debt.
The former Disney “darling” then went on to allegedly add jewelry theft to her resume.
And just when she was seemingly starting to get her life back on track in 2013, her mom, Dina, was arrested on Long Island for driving under the influence. Never a dull moment in the Lohan household.
Mel Gibson
It was hard to pick just ONE Mel Gibson meltdown, as the actor has had a quite a few over the years (who could forget his infamous “sugar t*ts” arrest.
But in late 2010, Gibson took meltdown to a completely different level.
Numerous taped telephone conversations featuring Gibson embarking on racist, sexist and profanity-laced rants were “leaked” online amid a bitter child custody battle between the A-list actor and his former flame, Oksana Grigorieva, in which Gibson threatened to burn down her house, put her in a “f***ing rose garden” and called her some of the worst insults most of us had ever heard.
Somewhere out there, Mel Gibson is simultaneously cursing the digital age and thanking Charlie Sheen.
Paula Abdul
Paula Abdul was seemingly on top of the world when her career was revived with her spot as a judge on “American Idol.”
But since then, she has had countless meltdowns, including one in 2008 where she was reportedly overheard yelling at someone at LAX in a “poltergeist voice.”
Tom Cruise
Once one of America’s most beloved actors, Tom Cruise’s descent into the unusual began with his romance with Katie Holmes.
In 2005, a giddy Cruise appeared on “Oprah” to discuss his new romance with the “Dawson’s Creek” star. What happened set off what Cruise called a “confluence” of bad publicity for him.
Britney Spears
In 2007, pop princess Britney Spears was in bald, er, bad shape.
The singer shaved her head in what seemed to be the most outlandish and sad cry for help after a year of divorces, hard-partying, rehab trips, sex tape scandals and strange accents.
Michael Richards
“Seinfeld” star Michael Richards’ infamous racially-charged rant was such a shock due in part to the lovable, light-hearted nature of his character, Cosmo Kramer, on the hit NBC show.
Whitney Houston
In the early 1990s, Whitney Houston was on the road to becoming the undisputed queen of pop music. Between mega-successful albums and a starring role in 1995’s “The Bodyguard,” it seemed the singer and actress was on the brink of absolute super-stardom.
Courtney Love
Party-girl rocker Courtney Love has had so many public meltdowns, she even admits she paved the road for Britney Spears’ breakdown.
The Hole singer has been on and off drugs, up and down in weight and can be seen looking everything from haggard to glamorous on any given day.
Mariah Carey
Pop diva Mariah Carey is a married mom of two. But the singer didn’t always have it together.
Robert Downey, Jr.
Robert Downey, Jr. may be riding high as Hollywood royalty, but the reformed bad-boy was once an industry outcast.
Throughout the 1990’s, he was in and out several drug rehab centers, failed two court-mandated drug tests and as a result, spent four months in Los Angeles County Jail and almost a year in State Prison.
