CRTC : Canadians Able to Terminate Long Contracts without Penalty

CRTC’s new Code of Conduct allows customers to cancel wireless contracts after two years with no penalty. Here’s what you need to know about the changes.

The new wireless codes went into effect in 2013, but as of June 3rd the terms expand to all agreements, good news for those in three year terms. According to the CRTC, beginning Wednesday, there will be no more cancellation fees after two years of an agreement. Anyone who signed up for a three year contract before June 3rd, 2013 is free to break that contract, but there will be a fee.

The CRTC says that fee cannot be greater than the amount of your device, if you were offered one at a discount, or the fee must be reduced each month and $0 by the end of your contract. To find out what type of fees you’ll face click here.

The CRTC created the Wireless Code to make it easier for consumers—as individuals or small businesses—to understand the contracts for their cell phones and other mobile devices.
