Daisy : Cancer detection dog receives charity medal

Daisy, a cancer detection dog responsible for saving hundreds of lives has been awarded a medal by pet charity Blue Cross.

10-year-old labrador, who is trained by Milton Keynes based charity Medical Detection Dogs to sniff out cancer, was awarded the Blue Cross Medal for her pioneering work in the field of cancer detection, where she has sniffed more than 6,500 samples and detected over 550 cases of cancer.

As well as using her acute sense of smell to pick out chemicals given off in cancer cells in samples of a patient’s breath, skin or urine, Daisy also helped detect breast cancer in her owner in 2009.

Dr Claire Guest, Daisy’s owner and Chief Executive of Medical Detection Dogs, said: “Daisy kept nuzzling and pawing at my chest one day, which really alarmed me. I got it checked out and was told I had early stage breast cancer.
