The Dallas County Medical Examiner’s office confirmed a 2-year-old girl died in a hot car on Friday night.
The temperature reached 97 degrees Friday afternoon at Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport.
The parents said they had returned to their home and had gone inside their home near Forest Lane and Audelia Road after spending the day at Fair Park with their children. They told police they thought all their children had been brought inside.
The parents said they took naps and when the father awoke, he went outside to work on his car in the 11900 block of Garden Terrace Drive. He then saw the girl was still in her safety seat.
Police said the father pulled the girl out of the car and called 911 while the mother performed CPR on her.
The mother drove the girl to Medical City Dallas Hospital, where she was pronounced dead at 7:19 p.m.
KXAS-TV reported that the family put a note on their door saying they were in mourning and would not participate in interviews.
It’s not clear how many other children the couple have, or how old they are. Police said Child Protective Services is involved in the investigation.
The advocacy group Safe Kids Worldwide said the girl’s death could be the first death of a child from heatstroke in Texas this year. Four died in the state last year. There have been nine other such deaths across the country in 2015.
