*Djuan Trent, who became Miss Kentucky in 2010 and finished in the top 10 of the Miss America competition in 2011, has made history by coming out as a lesbian – the first national pageant contestant to do so, reports People.com.
Former Miss Kentucky Djuan Trent made the announcement on her blog last month with the deceleration, I am queer.”
Trent said she struggled with the decision but thought it was important to enter the gay rights conversation.
“For a while, I struggled with the decision of whether or not it was necessary to ‘come out.’ I have realized that there is really no way for people to know that I disagree with their views or, even more so, to know that they are talking about me, unless I actually open my mouth and say it,” she wrote.
Trent’s revelation could make her the first openly lesbian contestant to have competed in a national pageant.
“Ideally, I would love to one day live in a society where coming out is no longer necessary because we don’t make assumptions about one another’s sexuality and homophobia is laid to rest,” Trent wrote in her blog.
