A Georgia woman had a 27-pound tumor removed from her belly on Tuesday, WSB-TV reported.
For two months, 58-year-old Doris Lewis carried the massive cystic tumor in her abdomen, a growth that reached the size of a beach ball by the time it was removed by doctors at Emory University Hospital in Atlanta.
At first, Lewis says she didn’t know it was a tumor. She thought she was just gaining weight.
After her husband passed away, she said she put the medical situation to the back of her mind.
Then, she lost her insurance, so when she began to think something was seriously wrong, she could not do anything about it.
Lewis went to the emergency room about a month ago when she was experiencing shortness of breath.
Doctors told her the tumor had to come out right away.
Dr. Alan Gordon said, “This thing was going to continue to grow. The good news for her was that even though it had grown a significant size, it had been doing this slowly.”
Lewis’ friends said the experience has been scary.
Her sister, Sarina Lewis, said, “It was very frightening, seeing her sick, seeing her throwing up, seeing this thing in her stomach that we had no idea about being there. Just seeing come through these hours of surgery, and the doctors saying that she’s okay, and that she did great, is very thankful and relieving.”
