Drone drops drugs into Ohio prison yard, starts fight among inmates.
According to the Mansfield News Journal, the drone flew over the Mansfield Correctional Institution on July 27 and dropped the package, which contained 144.5 grams of tobacco, 65.4 grams of marijuana, and 6.6 grams of heroin.
Per the Mansfield News Journal:
According to the “Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction”, on July 27 a fight broke out on the north recreation yard, and corrections officers Jade Wojciechowski and Melinda Hane called for assistance and gave orders for the inmates to stop fighting. Other inmates on both north and south recreation began running in the general direction of the fight. The officers then used pepper spray to control the fight and ordered all inmates to get on the ground. The inmates complied and remained on the ground as other staff responded.
The report says that the package appeared to have been intended for a specific inmate, and was thrown over a fence into an adjacent recreation area once the fight began. The fight apparently involved about nine inmates, though a total of more than 200 were outside at the time.
All prisoners were searched, and no one was injured during the melee.
The Mansfield News Journal says that authorities have not been able to determine if the drone was controlled remotely or if it flew autonomously using GPS coordinates.
