The FDA recently sent warning letters to five distributors of powdered caffeine, saying the products, which are marketed as dietary supplements, present a serious health risk if taken in too high a dose.
(1) SPN LLC dba Smartpowders, (2) Purebulk Inc., (3) Kreativ Health Inc. dba Natural Food Supplements, (4) Hard Eight Nutrition LLC and (5) Bridge City Bulk – Bridge City LLC., whose products are sold as dietary supplements.
Caffeine is one of the most commonly used stimulants in the U.S. The pure powdered caffeine is essentially 100% caffeine, and there is risk of accidental overdose even when taken in small amounts. Moreover, it is nearly impossible to accurately measure powdered pure caffeine with common kitchen measuring tools and one can easily consume a lethal amount, according to the FDA.
Last year, two young men in good health died after taking powdered pure caffeine. A single teaspoon of pure caffeine is said to be roughly equivalent to the caffeine present in 28 cups of coffee. Note that research has found that drinking more than four cups of coffee a day is associated with a 56% higher risk of death.
