Fentanyl linked to deaths of North Vancouver couple, coroner says

Fentanyl has been detected in the death of a married couple in North Vancouver last week, the B.C. Coroners Service confirms.

Hardy and Amelia Leighton, both in their earlier 30′s, leave behind a young son.

The coroner says toxicology tests confirm the couple had ingested toxic levels of fentanyl, in combination with other drugs.

Fentanyl has been the subject of repeated warnings from law enforcement about its danger.

The synthetic opioid is much more toxic that morphine.

Officials say in some cases, people have ingested fentanyl when they were expecting other illicit drugs, like heroin or oxycodone.
