The first image from Thomas McCarthy’s dramatic comedy The Cobbler has been released showing off its leading man Adam Sandler (Jack and Jill). Before you hesitate, the film sees Sandler return to drama in a role that sees him repair shoes with the ability to metaphysically step into the lives of the people whose shoes he repairs. Thomas McCarthy’s previous films have been charming and intelligent and it will interesting to see what he can do with Sandler’s stubborn comedic background..
Sandler plays the title character, a shoe repairman blessed with the ability to enter the lives of his customers. The likes of Dan Stevens, Dustin Hoffman, Method Man, Steve Buscemi plays a character named Manny.
Thomas McCarthy is directing from a screenplay he co-wrote with Paul Sado. Of the film McCarthy tells EW, “I lived above a shoe-repair shop in New York City that I used to walk by every day, and I always just kind of was fascinated with it, looking in and seeing an endless maze of shoes sitting around. I was kind of thinking about the expression of, ‘You don’t know a man until you walk a mile in his shoes’ one day and what the origin of that was and what that would mean to translate that into a story.”
