Home of distracted drivers, Allstate survey

Smoking, eating and grooming were all things Edmonton drivers were caught doing behind the wheel, earning city drivers the title of most distracted in Canada, according to a new tally.

Major intersections across the country were monitored over the rush hour for a tally done by Allstate. They were looking for drivers doing anything other than looking at the road.

For Edmonton they set up shop at Sherwood Drive and Baseline Road, and found that a staggering 88% of drivers were not fully engaged in driving. The distractions included things like talking on a phone or texting at 20%, and eating or drinking at 19%. About 19% were doing more than one distracting thing at a time.

Nationally, the average was less than half of our city’s number, at 39%. (kdr)
