An Italian nurse murdered 13 patients, Fausta Bonino has been arrested on suspicion of murdering patients in the intensive care ward where she had worked for decades.
Police say 55-year-old Fausta Bonino killed the patients between 2014 and 2015 in the Tuscan town of Piombino.
The victims were all aged between 61 and 88.
Investigators believe the victims, all seriously but not terminally ill, suffered internal bleeding after being given anticoagulant drugs used to prevent blood clotting.
Bonino was arrested after a study of recent abnormal deaths at the hospital identified her as the only staff member involved in every case, according to the AGI news agency.
Health Minister Beatrice Lorenzin said in a statement. “In the horror rankings we have reached a new peak of human misery.”
Italians are still in shock after another nurse who was jailed for life earlier this month.
Daniele Poggiali, 44, was found guilty of injecting a 78-year-old patient with a lethal solution of potassium chloride at a hospital in Ravenna, in north-eastern Italy.
She is also suspected of killing other patients. Pictures have emerged of her grinning beside the bodies of dead patients.
