A break-shift defect has led Kia to recall 42,222 Sorento SUVs in Canada.
Kia will recall more than 419,000 SUVs in the U.S. and Canada because the transmission can be shifted out of park when the driver’s foot isn’t on the brake, a violation of safety laws.
The 2011 to 2013 model years are affected, according to documents filed by Kia with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
“If excessive force is applied to the gear shift lever, the brake-shift interlock mechanism may chip or crack allowing the transmission being able to be shifted out of ‘Park’ without the brakes being depressed,” the recall filing says.
The recall is expected to begin Nov. 24 in the U.S.
The recall is not yet posted on Transport Canada’s recall database, but Kia Canada says it will be notifying its Canadian customers by letter on Dec. 1.
