Lilly Garcia, four, was shot in the head as she travelled with her parents along a New Mexico highway.
Tony Torrez has been charged with murder after confessing to the fatal road-rage shooting of a 4-year-old girl.
KOAT reports that Tony Torrez, 32, was arrested Wednesday afternoon and charged with murder, as well as various weapons and child abuse violations. He is being held on $650,000 bond.
According to KOAT, Lilly Garcia, 4, was shot in the head about 3 p.m. Tuesday when someone in another vehicle opened fire on the car she, her parents and brother were traveling in on Interstate 40 in Albuquerque. The suspect then drove away, police said.
The girl’s parents – who, along with Lilly’s 7-year-old brother, were not injured – pulled over onto a median. A man who saw the familycalled 911, then two nurses tried to help the girl until ambulances arrived on the scene, The Associated Press reports. Lilly was taken to a nearby hospital, where she later died.
Thanks to an anonymous caller, witness accounts and other tips, officers identified Torrez as a suspect and tracked him down Wednesday, according to the AP.
“This evening, Torrez confessed to investigators he was responsible for the murder,” police said in a statement.
More than $57,000 has been raised for Lilly’s family through a GoFundMe page.
“She was so proud to tell people she just turned 4,” Lilly’s father, Alan Garcia, told ABC News. “She just started school two days ago. She was very bright and very smart.”
