For nearly 22 hours, Logan Blake’s family and friends held on to hope that the 17-year-old would be found alive and safe after a torrent of water swept him into a storm drain.
Instead, the family learned devastating news late Tuesday afternoon as they were being briefed on the recovery mission: The teen’s body had been been discovered in Cedar Lake.
Blake’s body was found about 75 yards from shore, 30 yards from an island and in about three feet of water.
KCRG-TV reports rescue crews went into the storm sewer system, called in a dive team and organized volunteers for land searches.
The search included the storm drain where Blake and a friend entered the system.
City leaders said they are looking into the option of adding more warning signs by the drain since they do not put protector guards on the inlets.
“If you put a protector guard on the inlet, they get clogged in areas that have open brush and other stuff. Then you have a flooded neighborhood,”
The family’s pastor Jim Coyle said they’re focusing on honoring Blake, who was cherished by so many.
“I don’t think there’s a single person who knew Logan that didn’t absolutely fall in love with him and all that he provides,” he said.
A counselor will be available at Washington High School tomorrow for students, staff and the community.
