Manitoba : Second case of measles reported

A woman in her 30’s is recovering at her home in Winnipeg after contracting the measles virus while travelling in southern Africa.

Dr. Richard Rusk with Manitoba Health says she had limited contact with others and adds everyone is who possibly susceptible to catching the measles has been contacted.

“There is an incubation period though of 7 to 21 days, so there is always a chance someone could become symptomatic. They would then be directly linked to her and we would already be aware of those people, so it’s much easier to contain,” says Rusk.

Dr. Rusk says the woman had been vaccinated.

This is the second confirmed case of travel related Measles in Manitoba.

In February, an 11-month-girl from Winnipeg contracted the measles after she and her family returned from a trip to India.
