Mark Shand dies in New York After Head Injury

Mark Shand, Prince Charles’s brother-in-law and the brother of Camilla Parker Bowles, the Duchess of Cornwall, died early Wednesday of head injuries suffered after slipping and falling outside a New York nightclub after a charity event, according to media reports.

The royal family said they are devastated by the loss.

Shand had been at a Sotheby’s auction earlier in the night raising money for his charity Elephant Family that works to conserve the animal population.

According to a spokesman for the Diamond Horseshoe venue at the Paramount Hotel , Shand was also there at some point before heading to the Rose Bar at the Gramercy Hotel.

Shand leaves behind a 19-year-old daughter.

The royal family is now reeling from this tragedy — they put out a statement saying: “The Duchess, the Prince of Wales, and all her family members are utterly devastated by this sudden and tragic loss.”

A spokesperson for the Gramercy Hotel had no comment about what happened on the sidewalk.
