McDonald’s Canada is adding nuts to the menu, meaning the restaurant chain is now off limits to thousands of Canadians who live with allergies.
A statement on the fast food chain’s website says starting today it will begin to serve products that use nuts that are not individually packaged.
That means all food in Canadian restaurants will now come with the warning “may contain or come into contact with peanuts, tree nuts or other allergens. That means the possibility exists for cross-contact between nuts and other menu items.”
Prior to now, all nuts at McDonald’s such as those used to top sundaes were kept in individual plastic packages.
A new SKOR bar McFlurry, launched today, is the first nut-containing item that breaks that trend.
The fast food giant says it is now working to communicate the change to customers at restaurants and drive-thrus, online and through its mobile app.
Research has shown that about 2 per cent of Canadians have peanut allergies and 2.4 per cent have tree-nut allergies.
