A former Miss Italy contestant may lose her sight after acid was thrown in her face, allegedly by a jealous ex-boyfriend, in the latest in a series of brutal attacks on Italian women by spurned partners.
Gessica Notaro was doused in acid as she left her home in Rimini, Italy, this week.
She suffered ‘deep’ burns to her face and legs as well as damage to her hip and leg.
The 28-year-old was rushed to a specialist hospital following the attack.
Her ex-partner, Jorge Edson Tavares, 29, was arrested shortly after.
The pair met when they worked together at an aquarium in Rimini, where Miss Notaro was a dolphin trainer.
He denies being involved in the attack and claims to have an alibi, police said.
Tavares was issued with a harassment order after the pair split in the summer, according to La Stampa.
Gessica will require extensive plastic surgery.
Speaking to the Standard, Patrizia Mirigliani, a patron and organiser of the Miss Italy contest, said: ‘There can be no greater crime than defacing a person’s face in order to erase her identity, her beauty, her smile.
‘These are outrageous attacks which keep being repeated.’
Tavares has been remanded in police custody.
