Through DNA technology, skeletal remains discovered in a remote field in Pinal County in 1988 have been positively identified as an Arizona woman who disappeared more than 25 years ago.
Julie Grubaugh, 25, was reported missing by her out-of-state family on Nov. 27, 1986. Grubaugh had recently moved from Michigan to Arizona with her two small children and her ex-husband.
According to police reports, Grubaugh’s ex-husband claimed he dropped her off at a Phoenix bus station – then never heard from her again.
The case went nowhere for 28 years, then recently, DNA evidence linked Grubaugh to skeletal remains found in a Pinal County field in 1988.
DNA evidence also helped reopen the case of Susan Cook.
Cook was last seen at her West Phoenix apartment, where she lived with her husband and two children.
Investigators had very few leads until DNA evidence recently linked Cook to skeletal remains found in the West Valley.
Her death is now being treated as a homicide.
“The families have gotten some answers,” said Sommershoe. “They know where their loved one is at, but we still need to know how they got there.”
Authorities are hoping someone with information about these cases will come forward and help.
