A muslim taxi driver is speaking out after being attacked on the job in the Bronx.
Sirajul Islam Khan said he picked up a customer in the Bronx at Bedford Park and Webster Avenue around 8:30pm. When they arrived to the destination at 187th street, he pulled out money to make change for the customer’s $9 fare.
Khan told Bronx News 12 that as soon as he revealed his money, the customer began attacking him, ultimately stealing $200. When Khan exited his vehicle to escape, the passenger followed, throwing him to the ground and continually beating him.
While he spoke to reporters, Khan had visible bruises on his face, and he told the station that his attacker was screaming that he would kill him for being Muslim.
Khan’s family said that he is unsure if he wants to return to his job, but will install both a surveillance camera and partition inside his cab if he decides to do so.
Hate crimes citywide are up 22% this year through May 22, with 126 incidents compared to 103 during the same period last year.
Anti-Muslim incidents are also up, with 10 incident so far this year compared to just four during the same period last year.

SO WAS IT A BLACK GUY OR A WHITE GUY WHO BEAT HIM UP? IF HE WAS BLACK [NOT A HATE CRIME OR ANY CRIME BECAUSE VICTIMS CANT BE CRIMINALS] IF HE WAS WHITE HE WOULD BE STRUNG UP.
First of all, this is a shame and disgrace that this happened to Mr. Kahn. I really hope they identify whoever did this and they are brought to justice. With that said, here is a QUESTION: Why is it that every hate crime news stories are focused on the victims who are “minorities” be it their race or religion? There are other people who are mugged, robbed, and killed on a daily basis who may happen to be, let’s say, Christian and white by other minorities. You never read the headline “Mexican (or Arabic, Black, Hindu etc.) Kills White Male Christian”? But it happens far more often. The obvious answer is that news involving minority discrimination is far more appealing to the eyes of a society that loves controversy. I am a firm believer that there are just bad PEOPLE. Some happen to be White, Black, Hispanic, Jewish, Irish, Yankee, hillbilly, punk, posh, thug, preppy, yuppie…. Our media and government are dividing our world by planting the seeds of hate every day. On final note I can’t help but wonder why they story did not include the race of the person who committed this crime? Was it because he happened to fall under the minority umbrella as well?
