Nehemiah Griego, a 18-year-old teenager from New Mexico, has pleaded guilty in the shooting deaths of his parents and three young siblings.
In January of 2013 Nehemiah Griego shot and killed his mother, two younger sisters and younger brother in their sleep and then ambushed his father Greg when he came home that night.
Nehemiah Griego allegedly did it because he was frustrated with his mom. Griego agreed to a deal with prosecutors which allowed him to plead guilty to two counts of second degree murder and three counts of child abuse resulting in death.
He was facing five counts of first degree murder and three counts of child abuse resulting in death.
It has not yet been determined if Griego will be sentenced as a juvenile or an adult. He will first undergo an amenability hearing where a judge will decide if he’s amenable to treatment.
“I think the decision was made in the best interest, to both my client, Nehemiah Griego and his family, who are classified as victims in this case. It’s what they wanted,” said Stephen Taylor, Assistant Public Defender.
If he is, he will undergo treatment until his 21st birthday then be released.
If he is sentenced as an adult he could face anything from probation to three life sentences plus 30 years.
