Two people have been killed after a news helicopter crashed on top of at least three vehicles outside Seattle Center Tuesday morning and caught fire. A third person was taken to the hospital in critical condition.
The crash happened shortly after takeoff from the Fisher Plaza helipad. A report on the KOMO website said a man was seen running from one of the cars with his sleeve on fire. He was extinguished by officers at the scene.
“We heard the chopper swirling down to the ground. Rushed out to see the unbelievable, our @komonews chopper crashing into at least 2 cars,” wrote reporter Kelly Koopmans on Twitter.
Seattle firefighters said there were three cars on fire at the scene of the crash. Those fires have since been extinguished.
Helicopters Inc., which owns the helicopter involved and also owns the helicopter used by KPTV, said the helicopter may have struck a crane, but investigators have not confirmed that information.
Seattle police said it remains an “active scene” and the investigation will continue for many hours. Streets are closed in the area.
