A truck plowed through a Christmas market in Berlin, Germany, on Monday, killing at least nine and injuring dozens of people, Berlin police said.
Around 50 others were injured, including four seriously, and the suspected driver has been arrested, possibly close to the city zoo.
A passenger reportedly died in the crash which happened at the popular market outside the Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church in the heart of west Berlin.
Witnesses said the crash was not an accident and the lorry had shown no signs of slowing down.
One spoke of the vehicle “going through people” and “pulling everything down” as it tore through tables and wooden stands.
The truck veered into the market during one of the most crowded times, with people gathering in huts that sell food and Christmas goods.
Images from the scene showed the dark-coloured truck on the pavement with its windscreen smashed after being cordoned off by officers.
The lorry was reportedly Polish-registered and it is claimed the owner of the truck believes it had been hijacked.
A number of ambulances are treating the injured and police are telling Berliners to “stay at home”.
In July this year, a 19-ton lorry ploughed into a crowd in the French city of Nice, killing 86 people.
