North Carolina shark attacks leaves second teen severely hurt (Video)

A 13-year-old girl and 16-year-old boy each lost an arm Sunday in separate shark attacks at the same North Carolina beach.

A 16-year-old boy was attacked two miles down the beach shortly afterwards and lost his left arm.

The girl, who was visiting the area with family, was airlifted to a hospital for urgent treatment, said Oak Island Mayor Betty Wallace.

“One of the things we hope we never have to hear from a beach community; the shark bite victim is a teenage girl,” Ms Wallace wrote on Facebook.

“Confirmed that she has lost part of her left arm and may lose her left leg. Please keep this girl and her family in your prayers.”

Mayor Wallace confirmed on Monday that the male victim had lost his left arm in the attack.

New Hanover Regional Medical Center said both teenagers were in a fair condition after undergoing surgery.

Steve Bouser, who was beginning a week-long holiday, said: “I saw someone carry this girl (out of the water) and people were swarming around and trying to help. It was quite nightmarish.”

“It was like a scene from Jaws,” his wife Brenda Bouser added.

Witness Randy Milligan saw the later attack on the boy.

He told WWAY: “I tore off my shirt and tied it around his arm. He was screaming ‘is this real, is this a movie’ and he just kept on screaming.

“Some guy came running up and we took the shirt off and we put his belt around him really tight.

“I’ve never seen anything like it. It was like a movie. There was stuff hanging down.”

Both victims were thought to have been in waist-deep water around 20ft from the shore when they were attacked. It was unclear what type of shark or how many were involved in the attacks.

Town manager Tim Holloman said the beaches were open on Monday.

The incidents happened just a few miles up the coast from Ocean Isle Beach, where a 13-year-old girl was bitten by a shark on Thursday suffering lacerations to her right foot, local media said.

Red flags have reportedly been hoisted at most Brunswick County beaches and a helicopter was scouring the waters for the shark.
