A woman was killed and six other people were injured Friday evening when an SUV hit a line of people waiting outside a Buena Park restaurant, authorities said.
The accident occurred at low-speed in front of Farrell’s Ice Cream Parlour on Beach Boulevard, according to Cpl. Andy Luong of the Buena Park Police.
“It appeared that the vehicle struck a gate and the gate actually struck several of the pedestrians that were standing behind it. Some of them were pinned underneath that gate,” said Officer Bill Kohanek with the Buena Park Police Department.
The driver, said to be in his 80s, was detained for questioning. Authorities say the driver and his wife were leaving the ice cream parlor’s parking lot when the crash happened. According to investigators, instead of hitting reverse, the driver accelerated forward and struck the group of people.
