The Huron County OPP detachment encourages and supports residents to purge medicine cabinets of unused, unwanted or expired prescription drugs on prescription drug drop-Off day.
Last year 25 residents showed up at the Huron County location and dropped off 15 kilograms of drugs.
Non-medical use of prescription drugs have been reported as a community concern for many years, with prescription pain relievers being the fourth most commonly used drug by Ontario students in 2011 (OSDUHS 2011).
“This campaign aims to reduce the amount of prescription drugs available to those who abuse them and to educate the public on the danger and harm associated with the misuse of prescription medication,” says Inspector Vince Wurfel of the Owen Sound Police Service. “Most people who use prescription drugs for non-medical purposes often obtain the drugs from the homes of family members, friends or acquaintances. That is why it is so important to properly dispose of any unwanted and unused medication.”
