A dramatic video that shows a white truck crashing into concrete medians and veering off the roadway while travelling at high speeds on Highway 417 has led to the arrest of an Ottawa man on drunk driving charges.

Rocco Michelli was driving home from work around 6:45 a.m. Friday when he spotted the driver bumping into the curb. His dash cam captured the events on tape.

Michelli called 9-1-1 and followed the driver.

“I just couldn’t live with the fact that had I seen something on the news later on that day that a fatal accident, a fatal collision would have happened,” he told Bell Media. “I couldn’t live with myself, so I kept following right until the end.”

He updated police as he drove and can be heard in the video describing what is happening to the 9-1-1 dispatcher.

Michelli said he was shocked to see other drivers continue on as if nothing was happening.

“People are just driving on their own,” he said. “They’re driving with blinders. They’re not seeing that he’s swerving and straddling lanes and all that sort of stuff. Even when he was in the inside lane shortly after Nicholas and the car collides with the centre median wall, cars don’t even react to him. Brake lights aren’t put on at all. It’s somewhat disturbing.”

He said he felt compelled to follow in order to help police.

Officers were finally able to intercept the man in an industrial area off of St. Laurent near Walkley.
