Police investigate suspicious death in St. Vital

Winnipeg police are investigating the death of a 69-year-old man found in an apartment in St. Vital.
On Friday afternoon, police were called to check on the well-being of a resident of a residential block on Fernwood Avenue, in St. Vital’s Alpine Place neighbourhood.

The man was found dead and police consider the death suspicious. Police are now awaiting results of an autopsy.

As of Saturday evening, a police car remained in front of the apartment on the quiet street off of St. Anne’s Road. The entrance to the first floor of the building was cornered off by police tape.

Residents from the Fernwood Avenue apartment seem dismayed at the police presence in their three-storey building.

“It’s normally a quiet building,” said one tenant who didn’t want to give his name. He said on Saturday, police were knocking on everyone’s door asking if they had heard anything.

He also pointed out that just a few blocks away was the scene of a grisly parking lot homicide that shook residents of St. Vital in June of 2012.

Kaila Latoya Tran, 26, was repeatedly stabbed in her apartment parking lot on Clayton Drive around 7 a.m. on June 20, 2012 in a murder-for-hire allegedly orchestrated by her ex-boyfriend Drake Moslenko.
