A Saskatchewan man is trying to deal with rising veterinarian bills after three of his dogs had a nasty encounter with a porcupine.
Two of the dogs — Solijah and Nestah — ended up with muzzles stuck with painful quills, but it was Mahalo that took the most damage.
A photo on a crowdfunding page shows the pup covered in porcupine quills — some of which apparently pierced its heart and lungs, requiring surgery.
The bills have been adding up.
Mike Gerrand, a friend of the dogs’ owner Dennis Mazur, started the fundraiser hoping to offset the costs, which he says are nearing $8,000 and still climbing.
“Dennis is a youth worker at the Street Culture Project and runs a small organic farm outside Regina,” he wrote on the Gofundme page.
“Dennis has had to take weeks off work to travel to Saskatoon to be with his baby girl,” referring to Mahalo.
The GoFundMe page had raised almost $8,345 by Tuesday. The target was $10,000.
