Denton police continue to investigate persons of interest but believe they have their shooter in the death of 20-year-old Sara Mutschlechner.
Eric Jamal Johnson, 20, was arrested on a murder warrant for the death of Martindale resident, Sara Mutschlechner, on New Year’s Eve.
Johnson was found in Yuma, Ariz. and was taken into custody by the U.S. Marshall Service the morning of Jan. 5. The U.S. Marine Corps released a statement saying Johnson was taken into custody at the north gate of the Marine Corps air station in Yuma.
Mutschlechner was the designated driver for her friends that night. Driving back from a New Year’s party, an SUV pulled up next to Mutschlechner’s car. The passengers exchanged words, which witnesses described as sexually derogatory, before gunshots rang out. Mutschlechner was hit in the head and crashed into a utility pole.
Witnesses in Mutschlechner’s vehicle told Denton police Johnson was the shooter, which helped lead to his arrest. Additionally investigators say they were able to find background information on Johnson through social media.
Denton police says Johnson does not have a prior record. Once he is relocated to Texas, Johnson will be held in Denton County on a murder warrant.
In a news conference on Tuesday afternoon, police said they have the SUV in their custody, which was found abandoned. Investigators say they are still looking for the murder weapon.
Several hundred people held a candlelight vigil over the weekend to honor Sara.
