What does Paula do when she’s not cooking? She shells!
Paula’s taken up a new hobby inspired by a local Savannah woman known as The Shell Lady. After trying her hand at the art, Paula calls shelling “the best therapy ever.” She starts with a basic stone bust, and then creates her own designs by hot-gluing seashells and starfish. The completed bust pictured here served as a centerpiece for the day.

She even painted some watercolors that hang in her grand-niece’s nursery. We shudder to wonder how much a Paula Deen original will sell for on eBay in 50 years.
And while she’s managed to avoid the world’s most stereotypical granny craft (découpage, obviously), Paula found her own kooky crafting niche: shelling! The Queen of Southern Cuisine purchases stone busts, and then peruses the oyster beds she’s raked outside her Savannah, Georgia home for shells with which to accessorize it. She calls it “the best therapy ever.”
