Madonna can add another accolade to her trove. The original pop icon was named the 2016 “Woman of the Year” by Billboard.
Though her career began nearly 40 years ago, Madonna has stayed relevant in the decades since, adding to her legacy with every No. 1 hit (there have been 46 of them, by the way). The pop icon’s recent Rebel Heart tour sold 1 million tickets and made $170 million—an outrageous sum, even by today’s standards.
In addition to holding the record for best-selling female recording artist of all time and consistently killing it in ticket sales, the material girl earns her stripes by devoting much of her time and fortune to decidedly un-materialistic causes. The star’s Raising Malawi foundation is building the nation’s first pediatric surgery and intensive care unit, The Mercy James Institute of Pediatric Surgery and Intensive Care, named after Madonna’s Malawi-born daughter.
Amazing news, Madonna, and what a lucky day to receive it—today happens to be her eldest daughter’s 20th birthday! Happy birthday, Lourdes! It looks like the (nearly) royal family has a quite a bit to celebrate tonight.
