Rihanna and her mother took center stage at the American Music Awards as the singer received the first Icon Award.
Monica Fenty presented her pop star daughter with the award midway through Sunday night’s show at the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles.
“Can we talk about how cute Rihanna’s mom is?” Justin Timberlake asked while accepting one of his three awards, before affecting a Caribbean accent. “She’s so proud of the Icon. I am too, Rihanna, I love you.”
Fenty told Rihanna how proud she was of her daughter’s success, saying, “I know the journey in your career has not always been an easy one.”
In 2012, the Barbadian beauty was named the top-selling digital artist of all time, and earlier this month, she broke records in the U.K. as the third artist to ever top the U.K. singing charts seven times in seven years, joining only The Beatles and Elvis Presley.
But even more proof she deserved the award was her simple but strong performance of her hit “Diamonds” that she performed before being given the award by her mother, Monica Braithwaite.
“It’s amazing how you always manage to take good out of all your experiences. I’m so blessed to be part of this historical moment,” Braithwaite said.
Also, Jay Z, who signed the singer to his record label Roc Nation, congratulated her in a video prior to the singer’s acceptance of the award.
“You keep me driven,” Rihanna said to her fans. “I can’t believe at 25 years old, I’m holding an icon award. It’s weird to even say out loud.”
