A Dallas woman who tried to drown her two young daughters after the girls pleaded for snacks was stopped by her 18-year-old son, who grabbed his drenched sisters and carried them from the apartment, police say.
Sonya Ann Gardner, 35, is jailed on a $1 million bond on two counts of attempted capital murder of a child, according to police records. No attorney has been listed for her.
Gardner’s son, Jydesmon Gardner, fled the scene afterwards, probably because he is wanted on an outstanding warrant. Because of prior felony arrests, the son could still face a charge as a felon in possession of a firearm despite saving the two younger children.
Regardless of that charge’s possibility, Dallas police Maj. Rob Sherwin publicly expressed his hope that the teen will come forward as a witness.
“It appears that his actions may have saved the lives of these two children,” he said during a press conference. “We would like to speak to Mr. Gardner as a witness.”
The family is flabbergasted and mortified by the near tragedy.
“We don’t really understand why this happened but at the same time, it never happened before,” Ernest Gardner, the father said. “For this to happen this is totally out of her character.”
One neighbor reportedly heard the disturbed mother sobbing that she was sorry for trying to drown her children shortly before she was arrested.
The two children are now in foster care.
