The first US recipient of a penis transplant has left hospital, three-and-a-half weeks after the operation.
Thomas Manning is leaving Boston’s Massachusetts General Hospital on Wednesday, three weeks after the operation. The 64-year-old plans to travel with his mother and a family friend to his home in Halifax, where Manning is looking forward to enjoying his own bed and his mother’s cooking.
Manning says he isn’t in pain and that his body seems to be accepting the transplant. He has started walking again and can urinate, but he estimates that sexual function is at least another six months down the road.
Manning’s genitals were amputated in 2012 after doctors discovered that he had penile cancer. He is the third man in the world to receive a new penis.
