A mass shooting at Umpqua Community College in Roseburg, Oregon, left 10 dead and and more than 22 injured on Thursday, according to CNN.
Early reports suggest a suspect has been detained, after the shooting spree before lunchtime at the Umpqua Community College in the timber town of Roseburg.
The shooting took place in a science building, according to one report.
Marilyn Kitten, the mother of a student at the college, told CNN there were 10 dead and up to 25 wounded.
“He said ‘you know mum, there was no sound. He said ‘there were 30-something shots and no sound. How does that happen unless there is a suppressor or somebody knows what they are doing?’
CNN reported that one of the wounded was a female who had been shot in the chest. There was no immediate information on condition of the other wounded victims.
A spokeswoman for the Douglas County Sheriff’s department confirmed to Reuters that there was a shooting at the Umpqua Community College campus in Roseburg. The spokeswoman had no further details.
“Active shooter scene is code 4. Multiple casualties all pt’s transported,” the Douglas County Fire Department said in a tweet.
The Portland Oregonian newspaper reported that officers responded at around 10.40 am to reports of a shooting at the college.
Roseburg is a city of about 20,000 people, some 418 km south of Portland.
Authorities have cordoned off the entire area around the college. After the alleged shooter was detained, surviving students were taken by bus to a nearby fairground as the wounded treated and taken to hospital.
An emergency worker told CNN of finding “multiple patients” in several classrooms.
It is understood that authorities are now going over the as-yet unnamed suspects social media accounts.
The site of the shooting is a vocational college and has students of all ages, according to reports.
Shelly Stefanich, spokeswoman for Mercy Medical Centre in Roseburg, said that the hospital was the only one in town and most likely to receive patients, but could not say how many were being treated there.
Local media reported that authorities were combing through the campus.
